Snoring and couple life: the solutions that actually work
Beyond earplugs, what you can concretely do to protect each other's nights.
Apneroo Team
According to an Ifop survey, 45% of French couples report that snoring disturbs their sleep at least once a week. In 1 case out of 4, it leads to sleeping in separate rooms. Fortunately, solutions exist — and most of them work from the very first night.
First, distinguish “simple” snoring from apnea
Isolated snoring does not come with breathing pauses. It is bothersome but not dangerous. By contrast, loud, irregular snoring with silences and noisy recoveries can signal sleep apnea — in which case a screening test is essential.
Simple rule: if your partner describes “pauses” in your breathing, do not try any solution before getting medical advice.
Solutions ranked by effectiveness
1. The mandibular advancement device
A small thermo-mouldable splint that gently advances the jaw. Reduces snoring by 60 to 80% in most users. Our Nytra is the best-selling model.
2. Positional therapy
If you only snore on your back (a very common case), a band that prevents you from rolling onto your back can be enough. Simple, no in-mouth device.
3. Soothing nasal sprays
Used at bedtime to decongest the nasal mucosa. Real but moderate effect, ideal as a complement.
4. Lifestyle
Losing 5 to 10% of body weight, avoiding alcohol 3 hours before bed, raising the head of the bed by 10 cm: these gestures significantly reduce snoring intensity in most patients.
What does not work (or barely)
- Anti-snoring rings sold in pharmacies: no solid study shows they work.
- Nasal clips: marginal effect and often uncomfortable.
- Mobile analytics apps alone: useful to measure, not to treat.
And if nothing is enough?
An ENT consultation can assess anatomical obstacles (adenoids, enlarged soft palate, deviated septum). In some cases, surgery or CPAP are indicated.
